You don't need to be the world's greatest expert.
You need to know more about your subject than the person who needs your help.
Read. Write. Teach. Speak. Explain new cases. Interview people in your industry. Create guides. Answer questions.
And don't just write about the law.
Write about what the law means to the people who have to live with it.
Instead of: “Michigan Court of Appeals Clarifies Indemnification Doctrine.”
Try: “Three Things Michigan Contractors Need to Know About the Latest Court Decision.”
Same expertise. Much more useful.
Eventually, people will start asking you questions before they ask you for business.
That's when you've become a subject matter expert.
Do This This Week: Publish one useful piece of information about the niche you've chosen—even if only on LinkedIn.
