Young lawyers sometimes wonder why the firm's marketing department isn't promoting them.
Here's the uncomfortable answer: Because the firm has limited marketing resources, and it is going to spend them where it believes they'll produce the greatest return.
That's not personal. It's business.
So don't sit around waiting for the firm to make you visible.
The firm markets the firm. You build the relationships.
You can start developing your own reputation long before you've accumulated decades of experience. Pick an area. Learn it. Write about it. Meet people in that industry. Become useful.
Eventually, the firm's marketing department may start paying attention to you.
But by then, you won't need them nearly as much.
Do This This Week: Identify one industry, problem or subject you could become known for.
