Join the chamber. Attend the breakfast. Collect 30 business cards. Shake 30 hands. Go home. Wonder why you didn't get any business.

That's how lawyers often approach networking.

The problem isn't necessarily the chamber. It's the strategy.

Networking isn't about collecting contacts. It's about developing relationships.

Find five people you genuinely want to know. Learn about their businesses. Help them when you can. Introduce them to people. Become useful.

And stop walking into every networking event thinking: “Who here can send me business?”

Instead ask: “Who here would I actually like to know?”

Do This This Week: Pick one person you've met through a professional organization and invite them to coffee—with absolutely no sales pitch.
